Yoga is for every one. You just need to be careful and cautious of your health conditions while performing any Yoga Postures.

Is Yoga scientific?

Yoga was once considered as some acrobatics like any other physical activity to be performed by some sanyasis and sages, in which the body was twisted and turned in almost impossible forms. Today the world has realised and even science vouches for every statement given in Yoga. It is very much scientific with a logical base.

Can Yogasana be practiced without emptying the bladder or evacuating the bowels?

Empty your bladder and evacuate your bowels before you start with Yoga Posture. In case of constipation if you are not able to evacuate your bowels before practising Yoga Posture start with Sirsasana and Sarvangasana. But never practice advanced Yogasana without evacuating your bowels

Can I do yoga after eating food?

Yogasanas should preferably be done on an empty stomach. If this is not possible then you may have little liquid drink like juice, milk, tea and coffee. Leave a gap of one hour after a light meal and 4 hours after a heavy meal before you perform Yogasanas.

Why should the stomach be kept empty while performing Yogasanas?

Performing topsy tervy asanas or the ones that work on your abdomen may be uncomfortable after eating food. It may cause nauseating affect.

When should I perform Yoga, before taking bath or after?

Yogasana come easy after taking bath. Once you practice Yoga Postures you may sweat and feel sticky, thus it is preferable to take bath after 15 minutes of performing Yogasanas. Taking shower both before and after performing Yoga Postures refreshes both body and mind.

In case you are short of time then you may take bath only after performing Yogasanas?

What is the best time to perform Yoga?

The best time to practice yoga is early morning or late in the evening. In the morning, although the body is stiff and asanas do not come easily but the mind is fresh and thus you may get better results. But regular practice in the morning can combat this problem. Practicing Yoga Postures in the morning make you fresh and alert for your work.

Practicing Yogasanas in evening is easy as the body moves freely. In the evening it removes fatigue and strain of the whole day work and makes your body and mind calm and fresh.

Can I perform Yoga in an open area?

You may perform Yoga in an open area but make sure of the following-

  • It is not windy and cold.
  • It is free of insects and any other disturbances.
  • There should not be direct harsh sunlight on you. Although performing Yoga Postures in the mild sunlight of the sunrise can be beneficial.

What precautions should I take while performing Yogasanas?

  • Always perform Yogasanas on a mat or a blanket laid down on the floor.
  • Never strain any part of the body while performing Yogasanas. They should always be done with a relaxed face and breath.

Should I keep my eyes open or close while performing Yogasana?
Ideally when you close the eyes while performing Yogasanas you will feel the right stretches in the body and your body and mind will absorb the benefit more. Initially you may keep the eyes open to understand the movement or to even do corrections when required. Although if you keep your eyes open you may fix your gaze at any steady point in front of you while performing Yogasanas, as this will keep your mind focussed.

What is the importance of breathing in performing Yogasana?
Yoga is a unique practice where every movement is coordinated with your slow and deep breath. This practice of breathing brings the body and breath together which is otherwise scattered. This inculcates in us the habit of breathing at all times even in stress or anxiety or even at the time of physical exertion.
Always make sure to breath through your nostrils and not mouth.

Is Yoga different for Men and Women?
All Yogasanas can be performed with equal ease and comfort by both Men and Women. Asanas may come easy to the already flexible body of Women but they should always be cautions while performing Yoga Postures during the time of Menstruation and Pregnancy.
*Certain Yogasanas can not be performed at all during menstruation and pregnancy.

Can children perform Yoga?
Children can perform Yogasanas but they need to be handled differently as they are full of energy and sometimes even restless. The ideal age for kids to start doing Yogasanas is 7 years.

How is Yoga different from any other form of exercise?           

There is no similarity between any other form physical exercise and Yoga.

  • Yoga is the only method to work on the inner health together with the physical health.
  • Yoga works on your internal organs along with your muscles, joints and limbs.
  • Yoga works on relaxing the body and mind by bringing the body, mind and breath together.

Are there any side effects of Yoga?

Yoga does not have any side effect, but the following should be considered-

  • Every Yoga Postures have their contraindication, i.e. they should not be performed under certain situations like some ailments, or diseases. In such a situation you may perform Asanas that will help you overcome those ailments.
  • For the people who have not done any form of physical exercise in the past or are practising Yogasanas for the first time may experience pain in their muscles and joints for the first few days. The pain is worth bearing because once you overcome the pain the real benefits will come.

Do I need any accessories to perform Yogasanas?

You don’t need any accessories for the practice of Yoga except for a Mat or a blanket. Although there are few practices of Yoga where in you may use certain props such as

  • Blocks
  • Cushions
  • Belts etc

to get into the asanas comfortably.

I am suffering from some ailment can I perform Yoga?

Yoga is for everyone and can be performed by all to gain benefits. In ailments you just need to be careful to avoid the postures that will aggravate or increase your problem and perform only those asanas that will help you get rid of your ailments from the root.

  • Never compete with anyone
  • Always do Yoga under some experts guidance
  • Right place, right breath, clean body, Yoga mat are certain things which should never be compromised upon.

Can I do Yoga by reading a book or watching a video?

Yoga should always be learned from some trained Yoga teacher and then performed alone. Doing Yoga directly by reading from a book may sometimes be misleading for you. There are usually various tips which only a teacher can give you for every asanas. Videos can be used as a tool to see how an expert performs some Yogasanas but it should never be used as a teacher.
